Ain't got no junk that there is gold!!!
These guys are always funny to run into they've binge watched American Pickers, Storage Wars, and Antiques Roadshow to the point that they're determined the items they have are worth a hundred or so times their actual value.
Can you find some decent items among the junk at most houses? Yes you can but they're very few and far between and just because you saw it on TV doesn't mean it's as true as you might think.
The purpose of these shows is to entertain the masses and they do that often by trickery. The producer wants higher ratings so he hides a priceless heirloom in the mix to entice viewers to tune in and take an interest in the show. These shows often inflate prices, mislead viewers, and at the very least don't show the whole picture.
If you think these shows don't have an effect just go to a storage unit auction and watch units full of trash go for insane amounts of money because people who tune in to these shows think there's a million dollars hidden somewhere in that mess.
What you don't see on TV is the first thousand or so units they don't show because nothing good was in them and that's not good for the ratings.
I watch people list items all the time on my pages for more than the full retail price of the items new and the sad thing is sometimes they do sell to users who don't know any better. If you want to keep from making this mistake it's easy to step back and do a search on sites like Google Shopping and compare a quick price or two before deciding to jump on an item.

The seller just won't sell me an item.
Everyone buying has ran into this issue at some point along the way. The it's not for sale guy who despite having that car sitting in the yard ten years now that's half eaten away still has dreams of flying down the road in an imaginary mint condition restored version of the car you're trying to buy.
In these cases there's often not much to be done aside from biting your tongue and walking away mumbling to yourself.
You can try to politely point out that you have cash in hand and the project would be something nice for you and your son to build on the weekends in your garage together but when you encounter these sellers or lack there of there's really not much hope in persuading them to sell that imaginary gem they've dreamed up in their heads while watching shows like Gas Monkey and Pimp My Ride.

How do I determine what an item is worth?
I get asked this simple question all the time and the easiest answer I can give is search sites like Ebay. In modern times this is the method most pawn shops use in determining value for an item before making you an offer.
There's an issue with doing this though as most will find their items and jump for joy when someone has a buy it now option set for some insanely high price. You have to ignore the buy it now listings and find auctions close to ending and look at the ones that actually have bids on them these bids are a great way to determine a final price for your items.
Another thing to consider when pricing an item is most people love to haggle for a better price so if you figure out the price you want to get for an item add a little to it for some wiggle room and when you barter you'll usually end up at or very close to your asking price this holds true at vending events, flea markets, yard sales, and it's no different in the online marketplace.
